We want your pet to have a nice, relaxing July 4th holiday with your family, and something it takes a little extra work from the human family member to make that happen. Santa Fe sure can get loud when fireworks are going off, and it can cause serious stress and anxiety for your pet. A few simple tips can make your life much easier.
A simple way to prep your pet for loud noises is to desensitize them to them. If you start playing firework noises for your pets leading up to fireworks shows, gradually increase the sound and make sure to praise your pet and keep them happy to let them know that the noises in the background aren’t as scary as they may think. When the actual fireworks start, they’ll be used to the noise!
If that does not work, try creating a safe space for them in your home. A quiet space with toys, blankets, and treats to keep them busy may be the perfect distraction for your pet. Even better, find some calm and relaxing music to help drown out the scary noises outside.
There are some products that you may want to look into as well. A few we recommend are:
- Naturally occurring and calming pheromones (Adaptil for dogs and Feliway for cats)
- Security and anti-anxiety wraps, like the Thundershirt, Storm Defender, and Anxiety Wrap
- Nutritional supplements and special diets meant to reduce anxiety, promote relaxation, and maintain emotional balance (talk to your normal vet about these!)
We wish you and your family a very safe and happy July 4th holiday!
